You’ve made the decision to embark on the rewarding journey to become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). Between the 40-hour course, shadowing, a competency assessment, etc., it can be an overwhelming process. As many can attest to, test anxiety can be very real!
If you experience anxiety during test time, like many of us do, don’t worry, Helping Hands Family (HHF) has your back! Below are tips to help you get the most out of each step of the process and get you ready to pass your RBT exam.
1. Your RBT Handbook is LIFE
Get to know the RBT Handbook REALLY well! The Handbook contains a breakdown of the topics covered on the RBT exam and even has sample questions so you can get used to the language of the exam.
2. Questions, questions, questions!!
During shadowing, ask LOTS of questions – this is your chance to refine your understanding and fluency with the topics!
3. Do not be afraid to be HANDS ON
Make sure to be hands on during your shadowing! Running programs and working directly with a client will help prepare you for scenario questions on the exam.
4. Be all about the FREE resources
There are many great, FREE resources online – from practice exams to flashcards, you can find a wealth of information with just a quick search. ABA.Rocks is a great website to practice and get feedback on sample questions and mock exams!
5. “I need help!”
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! HHF is full of friendly, knowledgeable team members that would be happy to help and answer any questions you may have!
6. TAKE ADVANTAGE of HHF’s provided RBT training
HHF will provide you with free modules and hands on training to fully prepare you for the certification. Stay engaged! These trainings contain the information that you will need for your new job and the RBT exam.
7. Pace yourself!
Study a little bit each day rather than cramming the few days before the test.
8. Don’t put it off
Some people feel so much anxiety about the test that they delay taking the exam after they’ve completed their application steps. Instead, take it as soon as you can – the information will be fresher, and you’re going to be most prepared following the course and competency assessment!
9. Relax a little
Have a positive, confident attitude. Your studying will pay off!
10. CELEBRATE yourself!
You’re putting in a lot of work and the exam is both the culmination of that work and the start of an amazing journey – why not treat yourself after?! Find something valuable; that weekend trip you’ve been putting off, dinner out with family and friends, the new outfit you’ve been eyeing. When the test is done, take the time to enjoy your accomplishment! You’ve earned it!
